The famous Nigerian artist Wizkid was birthed in 1990 (June 16). Popularly known for his works within Nigeria and internationally recognized, this artist has been working in the music industry for almost two decades. Kicking off his career at the age of eleven, the artist keeps thriving in the industry and his success is a huge one.


The artist Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun was born into the polygamous family in Surulere, a small commercial district in Lagos State, Nigeria. The artist supposedly had twelve other siblings from the same father, Alhaji Muniru Olatunji Balogun. These children were believed to be birthed by three wives and they were all girls, as the artist was the only son of his parents.

Wizkid’s mother, Jane Dolapo was solely responsible for leading the artist to the path of music, as his Christian mother led him to start his singing career in church at the age of eleven. Although Wizkid’s father is supposedly a Muslim, his mother gave him a proper Christian upbringing.

The artist’s mother’s efforts later brought about the music group that he referred to as the “Glorious Five.” The Glorious Five was a formation of the singer and his friends, formed at the age of eleven. Being collaborative, the group practiced their music and sang at their local church.

The singer and songwriter met OJB Jezreel and took him as his mentor, and to help fuel his passion for music he started paying visits to Jezreel’s studio. There, Wizkid watched other artists like Sound Sultan and 2 Face as they record their songs. Such experience was a great one for the artist, and soon he became part of a record label.

In 2009, Wizkid joined the famous Banky W’s co-owned record label E.M.E (Empire Mates Entertainment). Soon after he got signed, the artist released his debut album, Superstar in 2010. One of Wizkid’s songs, “Holla at Your Boy,” his first single from the released music album gained fame and made the artist quite popular.

Interestingly, that song gave the artist the title of the most successful pop artist in Nigeria and within that period, the song was among the top in the music charts of about 15 countries. Other recorded singles from the Superstar album that caught the attention of many include “Oluwa Lo Ni,” “Don’t Dull,” “Love my Baby,” and “Pakurumo.”

The artist’s reggae, R&B, and dancehall music sounds gained him a huge fan base and he got the 2012 entertainment award of Nigeria’s “Best Album of the Year.” After his debut, Wizkid also dropped the Empire State of Mind album compilation in 2012. With great success, the artist kicked off the process of setting up his record label, and on the 5th of March, 2013, the songster made his intentions public.

That same year, Wizkid won some awesome endorsement deals from both Guinness and MTN. On the 24th of September, 2014, the artist released his second album, Ayo right from his record label. This album consisted of various hit music like “Bombay,” “On top your matter,” “Jaiye Jaiye,” and “Joy.”

The awesome transition of Wizkid to stardom is one noticeable success amongst other artists, as soon after his first released album, the artist gained a huge international fan base. Having a collaboration with the star Beyonce, Wizkid recorded the song “Brown Skin Girl,” which also gained fame around the world.

Other notable hits songs of the songwriter include “Number one lover,” “Fever,” and “Come Closer.” The success of the artist in 2016 is quite visible, as he gained global fame, featuring in “One Dance,” the single hit from the singer Drake. This song stayed at the top of the music chart around the world for over 10 weeks, even in the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom.

On the 5th of June, 2016 he also released the single promotional title “Like This,” produced by DJ Henry X, the Ghanaian song producer. The RCA Records deal of multi-album and Sony deal offered to the Nigerian artist in 2017 seemed like a major boost for Wizkid’s career. Working with other Nigerian artists, Wizkid released many song hits such as;

Although the artist bears the name Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, he had the nickname Lil Prinz during the early periods in his musical career. However, the artist made a nickname change during his teenage age, bearing Wizkid. This nickname has lasted over the years and the artist is famously known by that stage name.
