The famous Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu – Burna Boy was born in 1991 (July 2nd) is a Nigerian singer and songwriter. The awesome rapper and Afrobeat artist started music at a very young age when he clocked 10 years of age. Having a sound inspired by the legendary Fela Anikulapo Kuti, Burner Boy has garnered a large fan base both in Africa and all around the world.

The Artist’s Background;

The Port Harcourt based artist was born to Samuel Ogulu – his father, and Bosede Ogulu – his mother. The artist’s father headed one welding company while the mother was working as a translator. Being the only son his parents have, Burna Boy has three sisters. Burna boy’s state of origin is Rivers State in Nigeria.

Originally from Ahoda, a town in River State, the artist has a deep African root that blends greatly in his music. The rapper stems from a family that prioritizes education despite their great appreciation for music. Thus, the songster had an outstanding educational background, as he attended Port Harcourt’s Montessori International Primary School.

After obtaining his FSLC (First School Leaving Certificate), he left for Lagos, furthering his education in Corona Secondary School where he formed the Def Code. This music band founded by the artist hosted one of the national stadium’s performances, and during the 50th anniversary of Corona Schools, this served as one of the highlights.

However, he obtained his WASSC (West Africa Senior School Certificate) in 2008 and left Corona Secondary School for the United Kingdom. In the UK, the artist started studying Media Technology at the renowned University of Sussex from 2008 till 2009.

Then, he moved to Oxford Brooke’s University in the UK, to study Media Communications and Culture. Once done in 2010, the artist came back to Nigeria to complete a one-year internship with a radio station in Port Harcourt – Rhythm 93.7 FM.


Although Burna Boy started making music with the FruityLoops software a classmate gifted him while in school, the songster officially kicked off his music career in 2010. Working as an intern in Rhythm FM, the artist further signed a deal with Aristocrat music records, plunging him into the music industry.

The artist’s music is inspired by the legendary Fela Anikulapo Kuti; kindly note that one of Fela’s manager, Benson Idonije was Burna Boy’s grandfather. Also, the mother of the artist was reportedly amongst the dancers of Fela’s band in the 80’s. Rising to stardom in 2012, Burna Boy gained much fame from the release of his hit single title “Like to Party” that stems from the “L.I.F.E” debut studio album, which happens to be his first.

That same year, on the 9th of October, Burna Boy was reportedly amongst the Takeover artist of New Afro Hub on Spotify. Nominated for the 2019 Grammy Award on the 19th of November for his African Giant hit album released that year in the Best World Music Album category, the artist became more famous.

The songster alongside Mr. Eazi was announced on the 3rd of January to be among the artist performing for the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in 2019. Winning the BET Awards in 2019, Burna Boy won the Best International Act title, and soon emerged in the news as the “Apple Music Up Next Artist.”
